Grades 1-6

The Rudolf Steiner School seeks to enroll students who will benefit from our unique educational programs. Our students come from widely varied cultural and economic backgrounds and our parent body is a microcosm of New York City, with its diverse nationalities, interests, and lifestyles. Students applying to grades 1 – 6 must be ready to meet the challenging curriculum. A good attention span is critical for success at our school. Active listening, the ability to engage in discussion, and fine writing skills become increasingly essential as the grades progress. Children transfer successfully into and out of the school at all grade levels. Prospective parents need to be committed to eliminating television viewing, internet access, and video games for the children in younger grades and to limit access to weekends in the middle grades.

Application Procedure: Grades 1–6

Applications for admissions are accepted after Labor Day for the following academic year and may be obtained from the Lower School Admissions Office or downloaded from here. A parent statement, transcripts from previous schools, and an application fee of $55 must accompany the application. The submission of a photograph is optional. Please submit your application by December 1. We do not anticipate many available spaces in grades 2–6, but unanticipated openings may occur, and we encourage you to inquire about spaces at any time of the year.

Standardized testing is not required for admissions to Grades 1–5. Relevant information about our applicants is obtained from their admissions forms, current schools, and the children’s interviews at our School. However, the Lower School Admissions Office welcomes the applicant's submission of standardized test scores. Children applying to our sixth grade must take the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) administered through the Educational Records Bureau (ERB), and parents should arrange to have these scores, along with the records from their child’s present school, sent to the Rudolf Steiner School.

Transcript request forms can be downloaded from this link.

Once the admissions packet is complete, a tour of the Lower School and a parent interview will be scheduled. Students applying to the first grade will be interviewed in small groups by a class teacher in December and January. Students applying to grades 2 through 6 will be invited to visit their prospective class and to have personal interviews with the class teachers.

ADMISSIONS NOTIFICATION AND REPLY DATES: Grades 1-6

We notify families of admissions decisions in accordance with the guidelines set by the Independent Schools Admissions Association of Greater New York (ISAAGNY), of which we are a member. The notification and reply dates are listed below. Once you have accepted a school's offer of admissions, please immediately notify by phone all the schools to which you have applied to decline.
