Description

The curriculum at Rudolf Steiner is specifically designed to be college preparatory. However, not all preparation for college is academic. The College Guidance staff at Steiner exists specifically to share perspectives on the world of higher education and career in an active way, so that students understand their options, and can make meaningful choices after high school. Steiner staff meets with each student to discuss his hopes and goals, and helps each understand he can translate these hopes and goals into programs of living and study at colleges and universities. The Guidance staff also shares information on standardized testing (the SAT and ACT exams) and the application process, in order that students hard work and achievements are appreciated in the larger world.

As part of the college guidance process, representatives from financial aid offices, college admissions offices, and the alumni of Steiner come to the school to share personal perspectives and useful information to the parent and student communities. The goal is to have parents and students gain enough understanding of the college search and application process that they can make meaningful decisions based on personal preferences and aspirations.

Students arise from the college guidance process more able to elocute their ideas of who they are, who they want to be, and how exactly to bring those two ideas closer via college education. Too often, 16 and 17-year old student trade the language of hopes and dreams in favor of the language of anxiety and pressure created by college admissions. This has never been a necessity, and the college guidance office works to make sure that students leave with an appreciation of their options, a stronger sense of self, and a sense of appreciation for our wonderful higher education system. It is hard to go too wrong in this process, and our students leave with both strong ideals and goals, and a sense of humor about the process.
