Athletics

Many students are involved in our three-season sports program of soccer, volleyball, basketball, softball and track. Participation in sports fosters school spirit, deepens students’ social ties, and challenges them to achieve higher levels of individual skill. Our sports teams are open to all students, and everyone is encouraged to join. The broad level of support for our sports program over the years has resulted in a tradition of excellence. We take pride in the fact that most of our teams make the Independent School Athletic League playoffs, and that both boys’ and girls’ teams have won League championships. We also compete with teams from other Waldorf schools, touring throughout the Northeast.

Publications

The Rudolf Steiner School has a long and distinguished tradition of student publications. Each year we publish The Key, a literary magazine of poetry, prose, photography and original artwork that has won numerous Columbia Press Association awards over the years. Production of 15 East, the school newspaper, lets students practice their journalistic skills, while work on The Spectrum, the school yearbook, allows those interested in photography and graphic design to gain expertise in these fields.

The Key—Grades 9-12

The Key is an award winning literary magazine that publishes student poetry, short stories, prose, and original artwork and photography. Meetings are held once a week through out the year.

The Spectrum—Grades 9-12

The Spectrum is the school yearbook. Students take the photographs, develop the film, make prints in the school’s darkroom, write the text design and lay-out every page, and oversee the printing and production. Students meet formally once a week and are also responsible for committing many additional hours of time.

Fifteen East —Grades 9-12

Fifteen East is the school newspaper. Students meet once a week with an advisor to generate ideas for articles. While editors are responsible for the production of the paper, student writers provide articles for each edition.

Student Government

High school students are eager to participate in the democratic process. Each class therefore elects class officers and representatives for participation in the Student Council. The Student Council takes responsibility for various aspects of the life of the high school, and sponsors High School Forum meetings that deal with contemporary political, social, and environmental issues.

Other Activities

The Rudolf Steiner High School encourages students to deepen their knowledge of international affairs. A delegation from our school participates in the National High School Model United Nations--where students discuss political and social issues from an international perspective with their peers from other schools.

Students are also encouraged to take an active role in proposing and forming extracurricular clubs. In the past students have organized a Chess Club, an Outdoors Club, and a Debate Team.
