Beginning July/August 2010, and for the 2010-11 School Year we are seeking candidates for the following position:

Lower School Chair

The Lower School Chair is an administrative position responsible for overseeing administrative and academic matters regarding grades one through eight.

The Lower School Chair facilitates clear, effective communication between the Elementary School Faculty and various other School constituencies.

Candidates must have the following skills and qualifications:
• Significant Waldorf class teaching experience, with deep understanding of Steiner’s educational principles
• Strong working knowledge of organizational planning, meeting facilitation, school and personnel management
• Public speaking
• Excellent writing skills
• Proficient with email and word processing

Responsibilities Include:
• Administrative and academic oversight of grades one through eight, while coordinating with the Upper School Chair in matters pertaining to grades seven and eight
• Participation in mentoring teachers and coordinating faculty evaluations
• Some class teaching (on an as-needed basis)
• Serve as resource for Elementary School Faculty and Staff
o Receive questions/concerns and work toward resolution
o Promote professional development opportunities; respond to requests from faculty
• Parent Relations Liaison
o In cases where questions/concerns cannot be resolved by faculty, work to resolve issues pertaining to curriculum, discipline, student behavior, and/or faculty conduct
o Attend parent-teacher meetings, when appropriate; write letters confirming issues and actions
o Communicate with necessary bodies as appropriate
• Administrative Committee Membership
o Provide regular updates on Elementary School matters, and ensure Elementary School representation in decision-making
• Communicate with Offices and Committees
o Provide relevant information from Lower School that impacts the work of Development, Admissions, School Administrator, and Business Offices, as well as Learning Resources Department
o Relay relevant information to Parent Council, Board and any other Non-Faculty groups
• College of Teachers Membership
o Provide regular updates on Elementary School matters, and ensure Elementary School representation in decision-making
• Public Speaking includes:
o Fall Meet & Greet
o Open Houses
o Occasional Alumni and Development events

Area: The Rudolf Steiner School, the first Waldorf School in North America, is located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side near many world-class museums and other cultural destinations. The Lower School is housed in a historic mansion on East 79th Street, and the Upper School, newly renovated, is one block away on East 78th Street. The School is half a block from Central Park where many of our festivals are held and where the children play every day. There is easy access to public transportation.

School and Community: Our school is a Nursery-12th Grade school. We are a full member school of AWSNA (Association of Waldorf Schools of North America), WECAN (Waldorf Early Childhood Association of North America), NYSAIS (New York State Association of Independent Schools) and NAIS (National Association of Independent Schools). We have a strong Parent Council and an involved and supportive parent body.

Compensation: Competitive salary with increments for education and experience. This is a twelve-month position and will be remunerated accordingly.
